Friday the 13th - 2009

We saw Friday the 13th, 2009 last night and completely LIKED it. Very good remake that was neither cheesy or dumb. Very well done, well shot, and good effects. It has an R rating so the killing is graphic, there are excellent sex scenes, a good amount of humor mixed in and they don’t have to hold back with the scary stuff. ALSO, the sound track and sound effects are VERY well done. The “scary” stuff is enhanced by the sound effects that are perfectly placed and executed.
This is similar to the recent first remake of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, where they did a good job reinventing the film in modern times. The same people produced this new version of Friday the 13th and did an equally excellent job.
I liked how they introduced the hockey mask into the story, but I won’t tell you so you can see it at the theaters.
Here is the description from IMDB -
Young friends Whitney (Amanda Righetti), Mike (Nick Mennell), Richie (Ben Feldman), Amanda (America Olivio), and Wade (Jonathan Sadowski) end up missing in the woods near the abandoned Camp Crystal Lake (made famous by the original 1980 film), after allowing their curiosity to get the better of them and visiting the site where a psychopathic killer resides. Six weeks later, Trent (Travis Van Winkle) invites friends Jenna (Danielle Panabaker), Bree (Julianna Guill), Chewie (Aaron Yoo), Chelsea (Willa Ford), Lawrence (Arlen Escarpta), and Nolan (Ryan Hansen) to his father’s cabin on Crystal Lake for a weekend of sex, booze, pot smoking, and water skiing. However their seemingly fun weekend soon escalates into a nightmare after lone traveler Clay (Jared Padalecki) shows up looking for his missing sister Whitney. The police have searched with no luck, and Clay is now searching alone. Local citizens have advised Clay not to go into those woods, because anyone who shows up missing is already dead, and he is wasting his time. During his search, one of the students, Jenna, decides to help Clay find his sister, and they go into the woods. They find the abandoned Camp Crystal Lake and search the dilapidated camp house for any signs of his sister. They soon find themselves face to hockey-mask with evil reborn, reimagined, and rebooted, and his name is Jason Vorhees (Derek Mears)
I WOULD recommend Friday the 13th for any one who likes scary movies, even if you know exactly what is going to happen, lol. I was in a completely sold out theater and people were screaming and laughing the entire time.
Derek Mears plays Jason and he is good in the roll, even though you never see his face. He was also one of the scary guys in The Hills Have Eyes.

The news stories I am reading are saying that this movie will break all records for opening weekend box office for R rated horror movies. the theater I was in was totally sold out and I head that every single show for this movie was also sold out all day long.
Finally, I ALWAYS recommend going out and renting the original version of these remakes so you can experience what was so great about the first versions of these flicks. Only then will you understand why they have remained so popular.

What did you not like about it. It was NOT a remake, but a bringing of the story up to modern times. It had all the elements the old original ones did including big scares, gore, nudity, humor, etc. What did you not like about it?

Hands down, excellent remake. This movie had absolutely everything that you could want in a horror movie.

I did not love or hate it, not painful to watch. I did like it was a modern tale and not another “remake” of a movie I paid money to already in the 80’s.
Now having said that, It the story lost me immediately after killing the sawmill owner. WHY so soon into the movie you wonder. well if you remember not 10 minutes earlier the creepy old LOCAL woman said ” outsiders don’t know how to stay on the right paths,he killed her that girl is dead” and slammed the door. ( not a direct quote but close anyway)
So why in the next scene he kills the sawmill owner IN HIS OWN RESIDENCE; a LOCAL. This makes no sense to me, and if this is a modern tale why doesn’t he ALREADY have his mask until later in the movie.
I’m sorry but to me this is a huge flaw in the script that even a film student should have spotted. I could not get passed this mistake, some of you I know are screaming its just a movie just enjoy it. But if we will shell out our money for anything the studios spits at us films won’t get better they will just get more sloppy. Why reshoot a expensive scene over again if no one gonna complain away. ok thats my rant still as a jason fan you should catch it on video at a friends house.

I think since it was a modern retelling of the story, they reintroduced the hockey mask. That scene did get a huge cheer from the sold out crowd when I saw the movie. I agree it is a big mistake from the earlier films, but the movie has so many things that relate back to the original films that I thought it did a good job paying homage to its roots.

I respect your comments and I think you raised a valid point. Since the movie is not a remake but a modern retelling,I see a need to introduce the famous mask to the younger crowd. I didn’t cheer;but did smile when I saw the mask surface after that confusing scene.
The cheering I felt wasn’t because of the 5 minutes we just watched. It was an out pour of relief from the ones of us you have already been to this dance on Crystal Lake. This is the moment when we finally see the mask and heard that bone chilling whisper we’ve grown to love.Yes I smiled but it was a smile of “finally”.
I had been looking at my husband for 30 minutes saying wheres the music, wheres the mask?
I personally think they could have but the mask in his home the kids were in much earlier in the movie. But thats just me and then you wouldn’t have to create a scene that doesn’t fit the rules they set up for the locals.
On a lighter note I was very impressed at how creative some of the deaths were, and the placement of the nudity was a respectful nod to the earlier movies.
I did at one point defend the movie to my husband. He complained Crystal Lake was in the middle of no where and didn’t have people living around it. I defended this by saying its been years and it appears to make been developed, this is a great way to show the time laps between the films.

Saintbella,
We also were waiting for the chee chee chee ha ha ha and when it finally came we were happy, but I agree it took a little to long.
What we did really like was the beginning and how they took over 20 minutes of killing to actually start the movie. That was original and caught most of us by surprise.
I agree about the nudity, which was similar to the past movies. And they infused a lot of humor with it, like the pompous idiot commenting on the placement of the girls nipples was funny.
