AT&T HTC Fuze Review - My New Phone

I consider myself a super power user. Close to 4-6000 minutes a month in phone calls, thousands of emails and text messages, internet use, full use of web applications, etc. I literally always have the phone in hand, or very close by. I have had the phone for about 2 weeks and was a long long LONG time Blackberry user before getting the FUZE. I just felt it was time to upgrade to a WM phone.

Here is my review and thoughts after spending the past 2 weeks reading EVERY website, installing MANY applications, programs, plug ins, etc, and then taking some out if I did not like them. I have installed all the advanced config. tools and tweaked and tweaked for performance, etc etc etc…..etc.

1) The battery life is a joke for power users. So far the phone never ever makes it through the entire day without having to be charged up a little or again somewhere along the way. Now this is not that big of a deal because I can leave it plugged in to my laptop when at my desk and I have a car charger if I am out of the office for meetings. When traveling in the airport I always have the charger in my computer bag or the cord to my computer to charge when needed. My next purchase will be a back up battery to keep charged and in my bag.
- I have 4 emails accounts being pulled to the phone. One way I saved battery life was to change the settings to pull over much longer time intervals instead of every 5 minutes. Making them pull at the longest intervals you can deal with adds considerable battery life
- I immediately turned off the automatic weather update, which is also a power drain. I turn it on once in the morning and get the days weather and then turn it off. It still pulls each time a send/receive is done, but not all the time which saves battery life.

2) This is FAR AND AWAY the best all around mini computer phone I have ever used. I am a person who needs actual keys, so an iphone or phone without a full set of keys just will not work for me. I do a ton of typing on the phone all day long, so keys are a must. The keyboard is great and easy to use.
- What I don’t like is no classic auto word correct feature where you can just enter what words you want to auto correct (like in normal Word). The T9 feature is VERY tricky to get used to and many times you have to manually shut it off while typing because it will not recognize something. Also if you type fast it has a hard time keeping up, even with all the tweaks and fixes added in.

3) I LOVE all the sites (see below) where you can get programs and help to add to the phone. Smartphonejunkie and xda are particularly great. I HAVE NOT added a custom ROM or flashed any radios. I want to get the most out of the phone as-is before I start really hacking into it.

4) While TF3D was neat and cool - it takes way to much scrolling around to get to the actual applications in my opinion. it is flashy and the animation cool, BUT not practical for a heavy business user. In my opinion the SPB Mobile Shell program is the best add on for the phone and makes having the touch screen worth it. I have it set so i do not see my today screen ever anymore and the mobile shell screens are the only thing i see. (I like mobile shell way more then the Winterface program.) That being said I WISH mobile shell was customizable a little more then it is. It is still great, but if you could do a few things it would be incredible.

5) The Contact screen is HORRIBLE as is in my opinion. It is hard to find contacts with the keyboard closed and the screen to small. I installed iContact which is much much better, but is not customizable with mobile shell the way I would like. I can still easily access it and use the features so that is very positive.

6) I currently have a 4 gig memory card in the Fuze and I have ordered a 16 gig card that I will get soon. I have all my music, pictures, videos, power point presentations, etc on the card and it works great. I can easily access pictures and files to show clients or friends. and someday I will have a 32 gig card, which will make this phone beyond anything else available.

7) It is RIDICULOUS to me that there is not an included headphone jack ON the phone. Just NUTS. The included usb attachment works fine, but is huge and bulky. This was a BIG BIG mistake by AT&T and I am willing to bet a lot of money that future versions of the phone will have the headphone jack on the actual phone and not through an external jack. Obviously they are trying to push wireless stereo head sets but come on - I use my ipod headphones and they work great.

8. It is easy to move around the youtube application to use it (it is there, just hidden) and I installed the FM radio cab also, which works when the headset is plugged in. So the phone becomes a walkman with FM radio also. Pretty cool IF you use it. I use Sirius (see below).

Programs I really like and consider must haves.

  • Spb Mobile Shell - way way WAY better then TF3D in my opinion. This one program will be the main thing you use to get everywhere on your phone.
  • MyMobile - a MUST. lets you see your phone screen on your desk top when attached with usb cord. Way easier to do things on your computer then the phone sometimes, especially installing programs.
  • Advanced Config Tool - a must to tweak the entire phone. But to get this on your Fuze you are also going to have to change your NetCF. At least I had to.
  • G-Alarm - the best alarm clock in my opinion. Just so feature rich, works with your songs on your system, great snooze, etc.
  • Google Mobile Maps. works great and I use it instead of the gps many time and saves tons of battery life. Gives great and accurate directions and finds exactly where you are located and gives perfect directions to where ever you want to go.
  • Mobile Sirius - If you have a Sirius account this works perfectly. This does drain the battery but I now listen to Stern live at the gym just like I was listening in my car. It is great.
  • Total Commander - you have to have this to make registry changes to the phone.

Here are SOME of the Forums and Blogs about htc phones and windows mobile I have been researching for my FUZE. You NEED to read all the info on how to do things at smartphonejunkie and xda BEFORE trying to do anything big to your phone. But once you take the time to learn there really is no limit to what you can do with the FUZE.

There are TONS AND TONS of great Windows Mobile (WM) sites out there. I probably forgot some of them and will update this article regularly and add more.

Summary:

Pros: So far I am very enthusiastic about the features and options of this phone. BUT it should be noted that it does take a lot of playing with, tweaking, and customizing to really make it work the way you personally want it to. It is like buying a new computer that the store or Dell has preloaded with a bunch of basic programs. You have to add to it to really take advantage of all of the things it can do. I can see adding features and adjusting programs on an ongoing basis. There is a VERY active development community online which is really positive. Upgrades and new programs become available regularly and innovation is constant. The phone is also very stylish in design and look. Diamond back plate is interesting and nice, but also a finger print magnet.

Cons: The battery life really sucks. Having to use an attachment for stereo headphones sucks. Currently there are VERY few options for form fitting cases (like silicone or thin hard plastic) that protect the phone but allow you to still use it, without being a carrying case you have to pull the device out of.

Good basic review, I am a corporate power user with office connections in 4 countries. The Fuze is limited as you describe, and slow to respond like many others have griped about. Nothing compares to the speed of a top-end symbian phone (Nokia N95-8GB with a real camera and a headphone jack).
But I stopped reading after you said something about howard stern. I am sorry man, but how could you be taken seriously? This characteristic puts you in the power user for ‘fun’ not work category. Try getting a working VPN on the Fuze with 150 corporate emails daily and 25MB file transfers 3 times a day and you see the real weakness of WinMo. But the phone is very cool looking and feeling, other than the wait and wait and wait for response to the touch secreen.

superbiz - funny on the Howard Stern thing. I lived for 25-30 years in the North East (NYC and DC and he was there and on the air. Listened then, and still have since he went to Sirius. But enough about him.
I get around 100+ business emails a day (and many countless other personal ones) and easily that much in attachments. I have always been pretty good about deleting or filing emails quickly so have been able to handle the load.
I agree that the phone is very stylish. But I do not have a waiting you mentioned with the touch screen. mine responds very quickly, if not instantly. when do you have that lag you described?

Thanks for the review. Do you know if it’s available on Verizon? AT&T has horrible coverage in my area (otherwise I’d have got an iPhone a long time ago). I’m due for a new phone pretty soon. My Palm Treo is getting a bit antiquated and have liked a lot of HTC’s other offerings.

I believe Verizon has recently announced that they will have the Touch Pro available soon, which is basically the same phone as my Fuze (just different name and a few minor differences). Verizon also has the cool new touchscreen Blackberry Storm. Check out the Storm. I will look for the Verizon announcement and post the link if I can find it!

Verizon has it but it went out of stock in a few hours. I watch for stock every day to try to grab one. They didn’t ever announce it since the Storm was their las push and I guess they didn’t want to over shadow it.

Cool. Thanks. I did see the Blackberry Storm but I really need an actual keyboard. I know the Storm has that weird click touch screen thing but it just doesn’t cut it. I’ve got an iPod Touch and use it a lot but can’t stand the keyboard.

Jeeze. I must really be behind the times. I still have a rotary phone in the house, and my cell phone is one of those old motorola jobs with the orange display. Hey, they were cool when they came out!

I like to think I’m ultra retro. Old - It’s the new new.

Hey Political Disgust! I am not a power user but planning to get a smartphone before new year. My primary interests in order of importance: Phone, contacts/calendar, email, internet browsing and MS office functions. Is the Fuze too much device for the less than “power/geek” user? Some have suggested the Sprint versions is faster 3G. Any input or direction to sites? thanks. VJ

  12. By Political Disgust on Dec 27, 2008 | Reply

VJ - thanks for the comment. Here is my honest opinion. The Fuze is an AMAZING mini computer. I have a 8gb card in it and watch full movies at the gym and have 600 songs on it for music listening. It takes great hi res pictures and I can view pdfs, write endless emails or texts, work on Word or Excel documents, and surf the internet on high speed 3G connections. It does just about everything I can do on my standard PC. All of that being said I will tell you that you MUST be prepared to spend some time learning about Windows Mobile and all the customizing you can do to the unit to make it work the way you want it to. There is definitely a learning curve. I literally went to internet school to learn about all the things that can be done to these phones AND THEN actually learning how to do these things. It is at times confusing, but ultimately very rewarding.
Between the AT&T Fuze and the Sprint Touch Pro, there are few differences. My best friend has a Touch Pro so I see both every day. The Fuze is slightly smaller and has the diamond cut back. The battery on the Fuze is also slightly bettr and lasts a little longer out of the box. I am not sure why that is, but it seems to be what I have seen and heard from multiple people. The 3G networks are about the same with very little difference. They are both fast internet connections for your phone.
Finally I will say this, if you want a pretty phone that works right out of the box and you dont want to do anything to it, or tinker and play with it, then you should not get this phone. This phone is for people who WANT to make their phone great and have control of the features and how everything works.
I use this phone for work related things all day long, but I also utilize it’s advanced features for fun and social features also. So it does the best of both worlds for me, but it is an advanced unit that needs some tweaking and time to be everything you personally want it to be in my opinion.
I would be more then happy to help you with some direction and customizing if you decide to get this phone!

Thanks for the honest input. I am a full time REALTOR and a part time online real estate instructor at community college. What do you mean when you say you went to internet school to learn these smartphones? I am not afraid of a learning curve, but I am perhaps just a bit more techie than your average 58 yr old. I have many friends that love their iphones. My desire to be different has probably led me to HTC and I am currently with ATT although an old expired contract/plan. I do have access to a techie in our company IT department who uses the Spring HTC Mogul, so I may get help, but he loves Sprint. Anyhow, thanks for listening. Feel free to comment further at your convenience. I will likely buy this coming week. Oh yea, does the GPS function require an extra fee service with Att? Also our IT department has an Exchange server, thus offering me wireless sync for my phone, laptop and desktop, although I have not taken advantage of it yet. I assume the Fuze will handle this. Anyhow, thanks again, I do appreciate your review and personal input. VJ

I was joking about “internet college” for the Fuze, lol. I basically read enough websites to qualify for a college degree in Windows Mobile, haha.
It sounds like you have some good resources available to you if you do get the Fuze. Also once you buy it I will email you a bunch of links to threads with some really good starting info for the phone. (I actually started one of the threads that have lead to some real big tweaks.). The biggest thing is learning how to flash custom ROMs and radios on your Fuze to remove the bloated initial setups that AT&T and Sprint preinstall and install the custom ones that are being cooked and allow the phone to operate at its fullest, fastest, and least battery draining capacity. Either you have to do this or have someone like your IT friend do it if they know how to do it. But there are tons of threads on xda-developers and smartphonejunkie that walk you right through the process.
On the GPS I know that it is endlessly customizable and there are thousands of threads on the forums about it, but I admit to not having a lot of experience with GPS. I do not use the GPS feature like some people do. I use google maps and just get the written directions, which has worked well for me so far, but I DO understand the value of using the full GPS. I am unsure of the cost comparisons for GPS between AT&T and Sprint.

Finally, and personally, I like the design of the FUZE better then the Touch Pro just comparing unit to unit. I also like the keyboard layout more (they are slightly different). But the slick black finish to the diamond cut Fuze is a fingerprint magnet, which is sometimes maddening, lol. I have a skin that covers it now so no longer an issue. If you get the phone I will send you the links to these also!

Thanks again for the help. Not sure what’s holding me back. Maybe a little fear of the techie stuff you mentioned and getting frustrated. I hope to play with one soon and decide and move forward. Thanks. VJ

VJ - you know you have a 30 day trial period with AT&T (I do not know about Sprint) so you can play with it, do all types of changes, and then still return it if you do not like it. With that knowledge there is little to hold you back!

  17. By VJ on Dec 29, 2008 | Reply

I must verify the 30 day trial with ATT and company discount?? I already have the rest of my family on a Verizon plan, so I could add to that since I see they have the HTC Touch Pro. My experience with Verizon is good call coverage but really narrow on how your device works. I am wondering if they are not a good match with HTC. Do you know about that?? Thanks again for your input. Squeamish….VJ

One more question. Do you recommend a particular blue tooth ear piece. The Jawbones look enticing. thanks

  19. By politicaldisgust on Dec 29, 2008 | Reply

I believe Verizon JUST got the Touch Pro, but don’t quote me on that. I know they have pretty good coverage area as my wife uses Verizon.

Many of the BT headsets are good. Personally I have always used Plantronics with good results. The one I have now cost around $70 I believe, but the sound is great.

I just won the htc fUZE YESTERDAY AND AM sooooo NOT TECH SAVVY IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM. I’d probably be better off selling it rather than trying to figure out how to use it. I did stop at an AT&T booth at the mall for set up prices etc. and he showed me some of the features which do seem cool but I only use my PC at home for contests, school, emails and very little else, as I said I am not at all tech advanced. I don’t even have a vcr or dvd…I am so lame… he he. any suggestions for a real beginner?

  23. By politicaldisgust on Jan 3, 2009 | Reply

Hello Politicaldisgust. Great article you have there. I’ve had an HTC 6800 from Alltel since May last year. Just yesterday I got a new HTC Touch Pro, and have been loving it.

There is one thing that has been bothering me though, and that is the auto word compilation that pops up every time I’m spelling a word. I find it annoying that I have to watch the screen when I’m typing fast to make sure that its choosing the right words I want to use, or if I want to spell something in correctly, I have to spell it out, backspace it, press enter, then continue what I was doing. Sorry now this is starting to feel like I’m complaining to you, and thats not my intent.

Anywho, do you know of any way to turn this off? I’ve searched all over on my phone, and even went back into the Alltel store to figure it out, and they don’t know either. I’m assuming I’m going to have to download some sort of mod in order to turn this off. Do you have any ideas? I’m also going to try searching some of those forums you listed. Thanks for all your help ^__^

  25. By politicaldisgust on Jan 10, 2009 | Reply

I actually was one of the people who helped find a fix for the auto correct / word correct issue. All you have to do is go to the Options screen and UNCHECK the Suggest words when entering text command. Make sure to read my post on XDA at http://forum.xda-developers.co.....p?t=467806 AND this article (read all the comments also) on Fuze Mobility at http://www.fuzemobility.com/?p=1527

post back and tell me how it goes!

  26. By Alexkohnen on Jan 10, 2009 | Reply

Hey there, thanks for the links. I’m trying to completely disable the T9 thing from by getting the CAB file from the first step on http://forum.xda-developers.co.....p?t=467806 but the link from there is not working for some reason. I already made an account there and it still wont seem to bring me anywhere.

What did you mean by, “All you have to do is go to the Options screen and UNCHECK the Suggest words when entering text command.” ?

Where will I find these options? I remember finding auto suggesting words and trying to disable it, but it would still bring up the same auto spelling thing. =/

  27. By politicaldisgust on Jan 10, 2009 | Reply

Open up the ONSCREEN keyboard and then click to open up the widow that pops up and where you can change what keyboard you are using. click on Other input Methods and then Options. once the Options screens open up click on the Word Completion tab and UNCHECK the Suggest words when entering text option.

    post back!

  28. By politicaldisgust on Jan 10, 2009 | Reply

You can find the cab at http://www.ppcmobility.com/for.....25#post525 on the Fuze Mobility Forums!

  29. By Alexkohnen on Jan 10, 2009 | Reply

For the weird auto compilation that had been poping up for me and putting words I didn’t want to use, that did not work. Although now that I found all these options from the touch screen keyboard, instead of going to ‘other input methods’ I went to ‘Touch Input Settings’ and from there I have four options. These are, ‘Spell Correction’ ‘Word Completion in T9 mode’ ‘Word Completion in ABC mode’ and ‘Auto-Substitution’

I just disabled all of these, and now it no longer will try and decide what word I want to use. Although an annoying separate text box will still pop up whenever I am typing a word, but it has still fixed my problem for the most part! :]

Do you know what this separate text box is that I’m talking about? I feel like I’m making this confusing haha

  30. By politicaldisgust on Jan 10, 2009 | Reply

I do and I do not have it pop up anymore since I made the changes I mentioned. In the Touch Imput Settings I still have those 4 checked. Have you chosen the onscreen “Keyboard” and not the qwerty one.

  31. By Alexkohnen on Jan 10, 2009 | Reply

Yes I did have the onscreen keyboard selected, but I just found out for sure what causes that separate text box to pop up… well I at least found out for sure how to diable it completely. (At least for the HTC Touch Pro) I had to switch from the ‘Keyboard’ to the ‘Full QERTY’ and on that keyboard, there is a button just right of the ‘L’ key. on the button you can switch from ‘ABC’ or ‘T9′. I turned it to ‘ABC’, and now even when I’m with the onscreen ‘keyboard’ there is no T9 text box that pops up.

Is this something new I found, or is this what you were trying to explain? =D

(Oh yeah, I even have thoes four Touch Input Settings checked too!)

  32. By politicaldisgust on Jan 10, 2009 | Reply

there are 2 ways to accomplish what we have been talking about. Both are described in the thread on XDA and on Fuze Mobility. If you use the onscreen QWERTY keybaord you need to toggle that switch to as you did. I am sorry I did not suggest that earlier, I thought you had already done it since it is explained in the Fuze Mobility article! glad to hear it is working now! Cheers!

  33. By Alexkohnen on Jan 10, 2009 | Reply

Awesome, thanks for all the help. One more thing though I hope you don’t mind answering… now any time I click inside somewhere to type, being a URL box or just in a text message, the on screen keyboard will pop up, even though I’m trying to use the slide out keyboard on my phone. I’m assuming its really easy to diable this, and its just something I overlooked. Any ideas? I can’t seem to get it…

  34. By politicaldisgust on Jan 11, 2009 | Reply

Alex - I am not sure about that one because it does not happen to me but I am using NATF’s cooked ROM and have a completely different operating system installed.

I have to translate a few lines off of act 4, scene 2 of Macbeth playing a part in a play. but the theme is gangster and don’t really know how they talk. So can someone help me out please. here’s my lines. ROSS: You must have patience, Madam. ROSS:You Know not Whether it was his wisdom or his fear. ROSS: My dearest COZ, I pray you, school yourself. But, for your husband, He is noble, wise, judicious, and best knows The FITS O’ TH’ SEASON. I dare not speak much further: But cruel are the times, when WE ARE TRAITORS AND DO NOT KNOW OURSELVES; WHEN WE HOLD RUMOR FROM WHAT WE FEAR, YET KNOW NOT WHAT WE FEAR, But float upon a wild and violent sea Each way and move. I take my leave of you. Shall not be long but I’ll be here again. Things at the worst will cease,, or else climb upward To what they were before. [He addresses MACDUFF's son.] My pretty cousin. Blessing upon you! ROSS: I am so much a fool, should I stay longer, IT WOULD BE MY DISGRACE AND YOUR DISCOMFORT. I take my leave at once. [ROSS exits.] Here’s some word translations from the book. All capital ones above have translations down here. Coz: cousin, kinswoman fits o’ th’ season: Violent disorders of the time. We are… ourselves: We are considered traitors but do not know of any treason we have committed. When…fear: When we believe rumors merely because we are afraid. It…discomfort: I would disgrace myself and embarrass you by weeping.
