The Day After Yesterday - Reality Sets In

While last night was fun … now Obama has to do the actual job. Talk is great, and the 100,000 people rallies were great, but other then being the first African American president (which is wonderful), he has done nothing yet as the President. We CAN NOT lose sight of that important fact.

The job ahead of him will not be easy. It NEVER is for any President. Again I say - he has to actually accomplish something before I will put him on the same level with any of the other great presidents of the past.  This day and last night will pass and then what in the next four years? The jury is still out on how much “change” we will actually see.

I am hopeful he will be successful and at least some of the things he has talked about will become a reality. Remember people, it is just another day today. The day after yesterday. Regardless of the election results last night we are no better off yet. None of us.

Like I said I will remain positive that that he will be able to accomplish something, but we will see. Enjoy the day today, but keep it in perspective. All it is is another 24 hours. I voted for Obama so now he better produce for me/us.  We can not forget that in the short term bliss.

I think he has done something already. He has given the country hope, and that is an important 1st step in the process. My analogy is this: I am a former Airline Captain. 95% of all the passengers I ever spoke with after a flight told me in one way or another that they judged me, my abilities, and in fact, the over-all quality of their flight on one single factor - the landing. If the landing was good, the flight was good. If the landing sucked, the entire flight sucked. It’s like saying that the only thing a pilot is judged by is his ability to land the plane.

What they don’t realize is that a safe flight begins with a complete pre-flight check of the aircraft by both pilots, the ground crew, and the mechanics. Then the weather, flight plan, passenger and cargo loads, weight and balance specs, and a host of other things are computed and factored in to the success of a safe flight. It doesn’t start when the pilot shows up and starts the engines. It doesn’t end with a good landing either.

No, Barack Obama hasn’t done anything as president yet, because he has not been the president yet. But he is taking the difficult journey towards that goal, and along the way, has done something that I’ve not seen any politician do since Ronald Reagan…..inspire the people of this country to believe in their country and government once again….perhaps like never before.

He faces a difficult task ahead, I’ll give you that. But consider this: Had he not done what he has done so far, the chances are far less that he would be successful once he takes office.

Duke - good comment and while I agree with you for the most part, “hope” is fleeting. And most (if not all) newly elected Presidents in history have given the people “hope” right after they won. But “hope” has to eventually be followed up with results.

So I think we both agree that we “hope” he will be able to make some positive changes and live up the the platform he campaigned on to win the election. Because regardless of anything else, if things do not change you will see the same people who supported him and cried in joy on election night, turn quickly against him. So again I am hopeful you are right.

Hope is fleeting, isn’t it? Our society has progressed into this sort of “I want it now” attitude. We get instant news, instant information, instant contact, instant email, instant everything. then when something doesn’t happen right away, we get all pissed off, change our minds about our direction, and end up flogging around wondering, what the hell went wrong.

Delayed gratification………it is often a good thing. I “hope” we see results, too. Keep the faith, man.

While he cannot be grouped with the great presidents, his ability to instill hope and belief again in so many people says a lot. I don’t just mean Americans, people around the world seem to be expressing hope in the promise of America to be a leader and force for positive change in the world. Yes his actions must now follow through on all of this. It cannot be overstated that this election alone is a defining moment in America just as the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the election of Lincoln, Title IX, the Voting Rights Act, and MLK’s I Have A Dream Speech. All of these represent hope grown out of oppression and despair. They represent a belief in the triumph of goodness over evil. To me, this is a defining moment.

I’ve started my new initiative. I’m sending 20 emails (one per day) for the rest of the month to congress with what I believe are some of the things that we need addressed in this country. Let me know what you think!
