Why is it taking so long to convict these monsters?
By politicaldisgust on May 13, 2008 in Disgust Rant, USA
From CNN - A military judge approved charges against five accused September 11 plotters, including the alleged mastermind, but rejected charges against a man suspected of planning to be the “20th hijacker.”
WHAT HAS TAKEN SO LONG? 2974 dead people would be screaming the same thing…if they were alive.
The slower then slow legal process in this case is beyond maddening. This is not some small town local legal department doing the research! It is EVERY agency of the United States government (and the rest of the planet) doing the fact finding and proving evidence to convict these murderers.
The fact they have remained detained at Guantanamo Bay for almost 7 years without being charged just makes no sense at all to me. If convicted they face the death penalty. It could not come quick enough for me. i guess the question for me is simple - what is taking so long?

Good question.
It really is ridiculous to allow these people to continue to live. If they are clearly guilty, which I can only assume they are, if they have been held for 7 years already, then what is the hold up?
It’s probably due to all of the politics behind it, especially involving Guantanamo and all of that drama. Who knows really, but whoever is at fault should be ashamed.

From what I’ve heard, the actual evidence linking the people in question to 9/11 is pretty thin. Why that should be, I leave it up to you to think about.
The trials have been delayed because the Bush administration has not been willing to put them through the regular courts, and has instead tried to set up special military commissions that lack important elements of fairness. The Supreme Court has sided against certain versions of these commissions. A new law was passed in 2006 to restart the process, but they are still being challenged.
If the Bush DOJ had simply brought them to trial as normal, the trial would have begun long ago.

Are you sure about that anonymous? I can’t believe I am about to say this, but I am not sure this is a “Bush issue”. A lot (a lot!) of things are, but this is more of a bi-product of the asinine legal profession. These alleged criminals have good attorneys working for them dragging everything through thousands of endless motions and delays.
I am not sure who’s fault the delays ultimately are, but I can not blame Bush for this one, no matter how much I would like to…lol

Why is it taking so long for Bush, Cheney, Rice and the rest of the Bush War Crime syndicate to face a war crime tribunal?

It could be that if the sentence of death was actually carried out, these guys would become “martyrs to the cause”. Other terrorists would “worship” these guys and claim that these guys went to heaven to meet their “72 virgins”, etc.
Look what has happen to Saddam, his followers/supporters celebrates his birthday like it’s a national holiday. They even go on the day he died to his grave and place flowers there.
Convicting a terrorists isn’t as easy as it seems.
While you and I see a terrorist that should die for his actions, others see a “Saint” that should be praised.

That is even scarier to consider. Not “saints” in my eyes. Not even close
